Lagom, jedna od nekoliko švedskih reči bez direktnog ekvivalenta u drugim jezicima (kao smörgåsbord ili ombudsman) obično se prevodi kao taman – ni premalo ni previše.
Najbolje je lagom često znači jednostavno ZAUSTAVI SE. Nema više vina za tebe, dovoljno je đinđuva na novogodišnjoj jelki, hvala ti lepo i izvini, ali taj auto jednostavno previše troši.
Da, razboritost je suština lagoma. Razboritost i održivost. Lagom podrazumeva domišljatost koja ne povređuje, toplinu koja ne isušuje i svež vazduh bez jakih vetrova.
Drugim rečima: Lagom je termostat individualnog životnog stila. Svi smo mi različiti. Ne postoji idealan nivo lagoma – on varira od čoveka do čoveka i od mesta do mesta.
Naravno, u pouzdanosti i stabilnosti nema ničeg privlačnog. Spontanost i nepredvidivost su uzbudljiviji, čak senzualniji. U neimenovani grad ruske provincije stiže činovnik, „ni lep ni ružan, ni suviše debeo ni suviše tanak, ni star ni mlad“. Odmah po dolasku glavni junak Pavle Ivanovič Čičikov kreće da se upoznaje sa znamenitim stanovnicima, gubernijskom upravom i lokalnim zemljoposednicima, da bi zatim redom posetio njihova imanja kupujući „mrtve duše“. U feudalnoj Rusiji prve polovine XIX veka posednici su plaćali porez na svu svoju pokretnu i nepokretnu imovinu, uključujući tu i kmetove, tj. duše. Kako se popis imovine obavljao svakih pet godina, vlastelin je plaćao porez i na one seljake koji su u međuvremenu umrli.
